Captain Bradley

North and South, Part II

Captain Bradley is a Union officer on the staff of General George Hazard during the American Civil War. He makes an "unofficial" visit to Hazard's Pennsylvania home to deliver an urgent warning - a warrant for the General's arrest is imminent, involving defective cannons allegedly sold by his company, Hazard Iron. Although it's clear from his polished appearance and upright carriage, that Bradley believes in duty and honor, his loyalty to his commander and the injustice he fears is being done, compel him to circumvent the law to alert Hazard to the dire consequences about to befall him.

But Bradley's allegiance isn't blind, as evidenced by the cautious way he delivers his message. Hesitant to speak in front of Hazard's wife, perhaps worried about his own career if word of his trip should leak out, Bradley lays careful groundwork for the General before admitting his real reason for coming. He watches Hazard closely, gauging his reaction, as though to reassure himself of the General's innocence before giving full details of the conspiracy he suspects.
