Joe Deever is a home-town boy, and ex-boyfriend of Cissy Davis, living in the small southern town of Jackson's Point, Mississippi. He's a man of contradictions who is kind and caring to his grandparents, his sister and her children, yet he's also rumored to be the insanely jealous type who's capable of violence. It's these traits which make him the prime suspect in Cissy's predicted death.
Seeing Cissy with her current love interest, Deputy Sheriff Archie Necaise (Sam Beckett's current leap), prompts a possessive Joe to try and rekindle the spark between himself and Cissy. But when his overtures fail, he cold-heartedly takes a subtle yet sinister revenge, rather than resorting to the anticipated use of force.
Paul is a possessive, violently angry man, publicly hurling obscenities, and roughing up his younger lover, Doug, for allegedly flirting with another man. Feeling hurt and betrayed, he lashes out in a jealous rage. Paul seems to recognize that his own behavior is extreme and out of character, which only serves to frustrate and anger him even more. He's unable to take responsibility for his actions, however, instead blaming Doug by insisting "You're turning me into something I hate."
His fury turns to contempt when the police request his name, as he responds by placing his hands on his hips in a stereotypical gay pose, and mincing sarcastically, "I'm Emil Jannings in the 'Blue Angel'." Yet after an officer is injured by a flying beer bottle, Paul drops the pretense immediately, calling for a doctor in concern. No longer angry, he is subdued, even conciliatory, until Doug inadvertently reminds him why he was furious in the first place, and his wrath erupts again.
Later, the tables have turned, and Paul is the one beaten and bloody. All affectations now gone, he is noticeably unsteady on his feet, apparently the victim of police brutality. When asked how he is, he can only mumble "My head hurts."
